A Book About Different Plus Size Street Fashion

Inspiration, creativity and a great sense of fashion come in all shapes and sizes, and Bethany Rutter’s Plus+ book is here to prove it. The London-based fashion blogger and fat activist (formerly known as Arched Eyebrow fame) has edited and released a coffee table book featuring over 100 of the most daring and powerful plus-size street style looks from around the world.

Rutter was first approached by Ebury Press in the summer of 2016 and started working on the project about 10 months after. “I would never ask my agent to do a plus-size street style book, because I never assumed there was a market for it and that any big publisher would back it up,” she admits. But people are increasingly demanding a better and wider representation of women and society, and since its launch last month, Plus+ has received positive responses to promote plus-size diversity and impeccable style to a wider audience. “A book was published before mine, The Little Book of Big Girls by Rachelle Abellar, but it was self-published [and may not have been distributed as widely],” Rutter explains. “I think a book about the general sale was very positive for a lot of people.”

Mixing #BoPo leaders like Gabi Fresh and Nadia Aboulhosn with less established names, Rutter also explored talents outside her circle, looking for the sharpest shots: “I had to approach everyone and say, ‘This is the photo of you that I think is very cool and reflects your plus-size style and fashion very well, I want her to collect personal quotes about fashion and style from everyone to accompany the images.

To begin with, Refinery29 took Rutter on to learn more about the creation of the book, his aspirations for the project and to discuss the current state of the plus size community in mainstream media stories as well as in the fashion industry.
